Patchwork 005

Patchwork 002

I do not know why I bother posting images.  Any picture I have seen has not done Alex Grey’s work justice.  Grey is far more than the commercial, psychedelic artist he may appear to be; he is a master figure painter, educated anatomist, and a perfectionist-he was touching up one of his paintings during the opening reception.  And, yes, he did the album cover for Tool’s 10,000 Days.

The Art of Alex Grey at the Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion at Orange Coast College showcases the various styles Grey has explored in his 40+ years as an artist.  The smaller gallery features a lifetime of self portraits in all media while the other is more like a temple for his Sacred Mirrors, both of which need to be seen in person to appreciate.  Grey’s attention to detail, glowing colors, fearless scale, layered imagery, and illustration of the figure is inspiring.  Lastly, the exhibition is free.
