Is The End Near?

Artmarket Is the end to the HOT art market of the last several years getting close? The stock market has had some blows, the housing market is in serious crash mode, credit is getting tight and the hedgies are starting to take a beating. Rumor has it a couple of Culver City galleries are closing up shop and the smart money is starting to sit on the sidelines. Could be an interesting fall art season this year…

I never really thought that the Culver scene had legs – there has always been too much of an air of desperation and opportunism around some of the galleries there. I’ve listened to too many failing gallerists talk about how they’re “moving to Culver”
I wouldn’t use Culver as a thermometer for the art market, though. Given what people are paying for sharks in formaldehyde and other potentially dubious objects, I think the market’s due for a hit, though. There’s a bit of inevitability about it, and the economy is in the toilet.
