I really need to spend more time at our local swap meets. Maybe this could happen to me. ...

Tyler over at MAN points out that it's Art Fair time again and goes on to describe how fairs are the new way to discover artists and that the critics need to get onboard. Let's hope they don't drink the Kool-Aid. 1. The artists that are "discovered" at art fairs are the artists that sell, preferably to the big collectors. To use his Salon analogy, if Van Gogh were to show at Miami he would be ignored because he didn't sell. Guston too for that matter,...

The ArtReview Power 100 is out and unfortunately the OC Art Blog did not make the list. Perhaps they are unaware of the level of influence we have on the art world. Anyway, Go check it out and go head over to ArtReview Digital to get your free email copy, available on the 16th. Are you on the list? ...

Hello Peoples- So Artforum paid a visit to OC. Boring. Although this comment did stand out: I sat next to an elderly collector who wore the black pants suit and oversized Italian sunglasses representative of her breed. After bragging about the recent purchases of works by artists whose names I’d never heard before, she offered this insight when asked her thoughts on the biennial: “Let me put it this way, I haven’t seen anything I’d buy.” Let me help those of you that arent familiar with our local scene...

Artforum made a vists to the Calif. Biennial at OCMA and writes about it here. If interested The Flog actually has pictures of the art. Just scroll down a bit. ...

First in a series of Art World Facts: 1. All Gallerists hate other Gallerists stable of artists, especially if they sell. But they won't say anything in public. They just tell us. Cheers, Orangeberg ...

The California Biennial at OCMA will open on Oct. 1st so mark you calendars. I'll be at the press preview next week so I should have some photos posted up here soon. Excited about this one because Bull.Miletic is included and they opened the first show at The Office. More to follow. ...

I was going to try and stay away from this thing for multiple reasons but this has an OC Connection. OC based artist Jeff Gillete left a little something for Banksy. Don't believe the hype...

The OC Register came out with their 13th annual Best of Orange County list today and the winning galleries are: 1. Laguna Beach Art Galleries (is that a gallery?) 2. Wyland Galleries "Exclusive Wyland, Disney collectibles" 3. Village Gallery "One of the largest Thomas Kinkade Dealers" (Their words not mine) Welcome to the OC art scene folks! ...

First off I hoped to have some photos from Saturday night openings but I came down with the flu bug that is going around. Not good, sorry about that. Now on to new biz. Classes are starting up again all over the southland and that means that University Galleries are going to start kicking into gear. Some of the best shows you'll see this season will be in University affiliated galleries, especially in Orange County. So that means I will try and do a better job...

Received a notice today from Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects that they will no longer be sending paper invites. They are going to all e-mail invitations. Is this a more effective/efficient way of connecting to your audience or an attempt do away with a large cost to the gallery? Will other galleries follow suit? Is the art card as we know it doomed. Stay tuned. Slow news day...

Congratulations are due for former local artist Christine Nguyen. Christine is the first recipient of the Contemporary Collectors of Orange County's $10,000 fellowship award. Hello my Dears, Last week Chris posted to a link to story exploring the high cost of MFA'ing.  I, a lowly member of the proletariat class, did not have the same opportunities as my comrades in arms. So...

Sorry for the lack of posts recently. I had a birthday last week and well, I just got distracted. Anyway, the OC Art Blog is now looking to ad some writers so that we can keep the content fresh and stimulating (and give me a break). So if you are active in the local art community and would be interested in sharing your scene, we would like to talk to you. Just shoot me an email. Don't be shy. ...

Hey artists, Maybe you should think twice before running off to get that MFA. ...

In keeping with the sneak peek theme of the day here is a little sample/prototype of the new LA based art magazine Artillery that will be making its debut in September. Edited by longtime LA art writer Tulsa Kinney, Artillery Will be bi-coastal focused and will feature guest writing by John Baldessari in its first issue. Be sure to support your new local art magazine. ...

Ran up to Culver City to have lunch with Mark Dutcher and see some new work that he is getting ready for his September show at the Santa Monica Museum of Art and his solo show at Solway Jones Gallery. September is going to be a busy month for Mark. Some pics follow: Mark with Arbus Uber collector Diana Zlotnick has already picked up the one on the right. ...
